The plot of Tosca is set in a particularly turbulent historical moment in Italy: the year 1800, coinciding with the defeat of the Austrian army at the hands of Napoleonic troops. The opera revolves around three main characters: Floria Tosca, a renowned opera singer; her lover, Mario Cavaradossi, a painter with revolutionary ideas; and Baron Scarpia, chief of police, a ruthless man who uses power for manipulative and cruel purposes. Love, jealousy, deceit, violence and death merge in this intense drama, where Puccini portrays in a moving way the struggle between power and freedom, between the strength of the system and the fragility of the individual. This year we commemorate the 125th anniversary of its absolute premiere, which took place in Rome on January 14, 1900.
